View Full Version : Rod Holders??

I'm looking for any advice on what type of rod holder to purchase. I've been looking at the different Cabelas models and the RAM models. I would want them to be versatile enough to use both spinning and casting rods and to fit a rail.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Brian, Could you please give us an idea of what how you will be using them, Big dipseys pull pretty hard, if you are looking to run a bunch of planer board rods that makes a difference also. Thanks

I'm about to put holders on my rig. I'll listen to advise from all you guys in the know. Same use as original post as far as rods. I will be usinginline boards and flat line trooling for now. I may want to run dipsies or jets in the future.

Down East rod holders are a great choice. They have a rail mount that is very solid, and the're metal. They work equally well with spinning or casting reels and they are quick release, you just pull straight up on them. They have a web site, www.down-east.com. I don't think you'll be sorry, I've been using them for 15 years and am very pleased with them.

P.S., The rail mount runs about $21 bucks, but go for the Salty Series, its about $5 bucks more, but well worth the difference in price, you'll see what I mean when you open the web page, the Salty series is much stronger. They show a typical rail mount installation, it will work on rails from 7/8" to 1 1/4". If you should change boats later, (as I did 5x in the past 15 years) you can get different mounts and use the same holders.
Good Luck!

Ram the only way to go. 100% lifetime guaranteed, made in America, used by over 50% of the PWT and RCL Pros great prices either at Cabelas or for www.walleyesinc.com. One motion to remove rod no going out and over the side of the boat to get the rod out and they keep them up off the deck

I have a fly-in Canadian trip this spring, and would like to try some trolling this year (long lining and perhaps boards). Will the standard series work, or should I go with the Salty series? I will need the clamp type. I read the post below, but was not sure if this was applying to rail mounts.

Brian, I have the ram tubes, tite loks, & cabelas quick draws, I like the ram tubes the best but they will not hold a rod with a big dipsey without slowly pulling back. I like the quick draws for salmon and steelhead, I like the tite loks because they take whatever I put in there. If I had my choice I would go with ram tubes all around with two or three Beefy aluminum or stainless tube holders on the corners.
If you are going to run over three planer rods a side you want holders you can angle in increments. You might want to look at ETT's message board and ask your question there, those guys do some heavy duty trolling and know what works
I've been using Drift Master for 15 years and really like them. Kind of a no frills design but easy to remove rod and works with any type. You should use left threaded holders for starboard side if your going to troll. http://www.driftmaster.com

I agree. The RAM rod holders are excellent. They are what I would suggest.
