I am very interested in the Techna AV spin rods for jig fishing. How does the M action rod perform as a jigging rod? I'd be using a 2000 or 2500 sized reel and 8 lb. line on the rod and casting mostly 1/8th and 1/4th oz hair jigs and plastics. Not vertical jigging rivers cause I think a 6 foot M rod is better for that. I am leaning toward the 6 1/2 foot medium action rod as the right rod for this casting application. Would this length Techna be the "best" overall choice or should I consider the 7 foot rod? I don't care for the longer handle on the 7 footer yet I am concerned about having enough tip action especially if I use 1/8th oz. jigs and the rod is rated 1/4th-5/8th oz. Do any of you jig fish with the Techna AV rods? I appreciate any opinions. Thanks a lot,
DJS

I would recommend the 6'6" light fast. Great for pitching jigs and some light vertical jigging. Also works good for rigging.

The 6'6 Techna is a sweet rod for casting jigs, you will find that since the fibers in the techna are spiraled forward, instead of wrapped in the normal fashion, you will get better casting distance. You will notice when you cast the rod tip will move up and down, rather then side to side. This causes less friction on the line which equals greater distance. I would go witht he 6'6 Medium action.
Good luck with your descision...either way you'll be happy.

Since you mention the use of 1/8th oz jigs, I have to respectfully disagree with the Pikemans recommendation on the Medium action rod - and go with the light action rod.

Since this rod has such a high modulus - it tends to run on the stiff side. With a medium action rod - I believe, that it is really too stiff to nicely work 1/8th oz jigs.

If you were fishing 3/8 - 1/2 oz jigs - I think that the medium action rod, would be perfect.

But for the 1/8th to 1/4 oz -- and particularly for casting, I think you will have much greater enjoyment, and success with the light action rod.

Thanks to all the above replies. REW, that was what I thought, that the M action was a bit too much for 1/8th oz. jigs, which I use about 50% of the time, casting at least. I decided to make the 1 hr. drive to the Fenwick dealer that has Techna spin rods so I can feel the rods for myself before plunking down the considerable dollars. Though I do take to heart what you all said. I imagine I will like the rod enough that I will eventually get the medium for the heavier jigs. Thanks again,
Dave

Dave,
When I first started Walleye fishing, I started with medium action rods, based on "recommendations."
Again, because I primarily pitch 1/8th oz jigs - I seldom use a medium rod any more.
Most of my rods - that I use, when pitching are either medium light or light actions.

If I am doing some deep vertical jigging with jigs heavier than 1/8th oz, then I go up to the medium action jigs.
