Siberts Take the Top Spot in LEWT Opener

The Crown Battery, Starcraft Marine Lake Erie Walleye Trail (LEWT) held their first event of the 2010 season on Saturday April 3rd at Fenwick Marina. The participants of the sold out event had great weather for prefishing and during the morning of the event with high winds in the afternoon and during the weigh in.

Even mother nature throwing a curve ball into the mix couldn’t stop the 2009 LEWT Team of the Year from starting 2010 with another win. The father and son team of Tommy Sibert of Castalia and Tom Sibert of Sandusky took the top spot by bringing in 44.14 pounds to the scales to outdistance the competition. The Siberts are no strangers to the top spot as they also won the 2009 opener at Fenwick Marina. Finishing second was Scott Gietgey of Canton and Joe Nadzam of North Royalton with a bag weighing 42.1 pounds. Bringing in the third basket to exceed 40 pounds at 40.08 pounds was Dick Chicoine of Port Clinton and John Below of Marblehead. Rounding out the top five were Charlie Robertson of Perrysburg and Mike Zaborski of Sheffield Lake in fourth and Dave Truett of Marblehead and Dan Stier of Mina, SD in fifth.

Anchoring the bag brought on by the Siberts was a 12.11 pound fish that also gave them the top spot for the Cranberry Creek Big Fish award. In addition to the cash payout they received the Siberts took home a free mount of the award winning fish courtesy of Jims Taxidermy of Port Clinton. They also received a transferable gift certificate from Cranberry Creek Marina for taking the top spot.

The Siberts completed the full sweep of awards by taking the Medina Plating Early Bird award as the top finishing Early bird team. This brought the total value of their days winnings to over $3,500.

The teams brought in a total of 221 fish to the scales that averaged over 6.3 pounds each. The winning combination was Gold Clown Reef Runners ran high in the water column on the east side of the reef complex.
