I know this really depends on the year and the weather, but generally when to the black flies and mosquitoes begin to appear? This year I'll be up from June 7-11, a good 3 week after my usual trip. Should I prepare to be bug bait? :smirk:

It's the right time but on the wate they don't "bug" you
It's mostly when you are coming back at night

Black flies will be out to get your while on the water during the day for sure. Bring 100% deet. Mosquitos will be out to carry you away at dusk.

If I heard up north of Lake Nippissing in Ontario or into Ontario around Memorial Day, I bring head nets, deet, long sleeve shirts, duct tape, and Jim Beam to dull the itch. Sometimes a Goretex rainsuit is very useful for something other than rain.

The only time I was on Gouin was last week of May and we had no bugs at all.I fear you will be hitting the peak season two weeks later. For flys I mostly try to coverup as much as I can in loose clothes.I dont like deet but sometimes you just have to use some.I dont worry about the skeeters.
