Would it be ok to use a short CB antena with a vhf marine radio? Does any one have experience with this?

In a word -- "NO"!
The CB antenna is resonant at around 27MHz in the HF range, and the marine radio expects to see an antenna resonant around 162 MHz in the VHF range. Not only won't it work very well, but you risk releasing the smoke from your transmitter.

As marine vhf antennas are so available and so affordable , why try to compromise your radio and crew ?

BlackSilver,
Maybe you shopuld told him the;
"Theory Of Operation Of All Electrical Equipment"
All electrical equipment actually runs on smoke.
Such equipment, ie; computers, radios, toasters, and even some outboard motors, will immediately cease operation upon release of said smoke.
If the above smoke is lost from said equipment, the replacement of the smoke and removal of scorch marks will entail repairs usually in the range of 75 to 225% of original cost.

i have seen several antennae resonant at several different frequencies! not to say that the antenna you are speaking of will work for you but dont count it out. take it to a radio shop and have it's resonance checked for the frequency you wish to work. now on a performance note.... it could be resonant but it may not perform as you wish. that's where an 8' shakespeare 5/8 wave antenna comes in handy. they are about a hundred bucks,and i would still check it's swr b4 installing it.
