Ok this may be off the wall a bit but I am replacing my batteries and no exchange is required. I pour all my own lead, so is it possible to get the lead out of these old batteries without endangering the environment or myself?

If so how do you do that?

Thanks in advance!

Most newer batterys have other trace metals, one of them that is used to increase the life of the lead acid batterys is very hazerdous to inhale, more so than lead. I've read articles on bullet casting that say you should avoid using battery lead at all costs. Lead pipe from plumbing can usually be purchased at a scrap recycler for .50 a lb. or less and is considerably higher yeilding than a battery. Wheel weights are also easy to get and are slightly harder as they have some antimony in them. If you can find some old babitt bearings they are very hard and work fine as well.

I believe many lead batteries also have some cadmium in it very, very toxic. BTW. you might do a seach for lead levels and high blood pressure. An interesting if unconclusive test shows that using a special xray techique of measuring the lead levels in the pattella shows nearly everyone with HBP to have a corolating high lead level,..I believe its called a phosphoresent lead xray test ,...Mt Siani Hosp in NY does it,as well as a few others. Based on a Harvard study a few years ago..
