Getting the camper all set up and the adhesive left behind from some duct tape is all over the aluminum. Wondering what solvent would be good for removing the adhesive. Thanks for all replies in advance.

Two things have worked for me. One, soak the area down with WD-40 and wait a few minutes. Wipe it down with a shop wag or cotton hand towel. You may have to do this several times. The other thing that works is brake cleaner spray. Same method but wipe down befor it evaporates. Good luck

Laquer thinner works real well also if surface is not painted.

You can also try a hair dryer or a heat gun on the lowest setting and a plastic scraper. I removed masking tape that had baked in the sun off of gelcoat that way.

Two things -
Basically, the adhesive in duct tape is petroleum based. Simple mineral spirits, or paint thinner - work better than nearly than anything else. This works better, because mineral spirits is heavier bodied with a relatively slow evaporation rate.

I soak the adhesive down with mineral spirits - use a heat gun to heat the area a bit, and help soften the adhesive some more and then simply wipe off.

If you want all of the residue gone - then the use of brake cleaner - a very quick evaporating solvent - leaving no residue - is an excellent choice.

Also - if, in the future - before taking duct tape or other labels or decals off - or labels on new purchases etc. - use a heat gun to heat the label, or tape before beginning removal. If you heat the tape or label first, in most instances, there is nearly 0 residue left behind to clean up.

Take care

I'll second the choice of Goo Gone. Works every time for me. It's one of those citrus based cleaners.

Get a jug of acetone. Lowe's or Home Depot carry it, so does Wal Mart in the paint section. A quart will run you about $3, a gallon costs about $7. The stuff will take it right off, its will also take off most stains, bottom water stain, pine sap, bug splatter, and - unfortunately - some plastics. So be a bit careful with it around plastic.

I'll third the GOO GONE. These others are good suggestions, but this stuff works quick, easy and painless on all adhesive removal jobs.

I fourth the Goo Gone. Get it at WalMart in the cleaning products isle. It is a citris based cleaner that will remove all kinds of adheasive residues. Spray it on, let it sit for a minute and wipe it off. You might have to repeat this a few times for really heavy residue, but it is bio-safe, smells great and will not stain your aluminum.

Another great cleaner is Simple Green...but that is more for tough dirt like brake dust on your rims, etc.

Just add water and have fun!

I've used isopropyl with good results. It just happened to be handy at the time.

Goo Gone has a new product called Painters Pal. It is goo gone in an aerosol gell. When you spray it on verticle sufaces it stays there and doesn't run. Home Depot has it and I'm sure most other big box stores would carry it.
