I was wondering what are some of the best and proven tactics for catching walleye in weeds. There is submergent vegitation and emergent. I would appreciate any help that you guys and gals good give me.

Anchored with a bobber and a minnow in spring (Leach in summer).

or...

Drifting with a jig and a minnow if they are deep in tall weeds.

or...

pull cranks over the tops of the weeds if the eyes are suspended or the weed beds are not tall yet.

Both the last two will require constant hook cleaning, but either way, there are a blast!

Can you hear them calling, MN fisherman? 3 more weeks...WoooHooo!

Try 'rip jigging.' It involves using a maribou jig and pork. Let the jig work down into the weeds. Give it a few jiggles. If there are no takers, rip it upward with alot of force. This clears it of weeds and makes quite a disturbance. The hits, at least in my experience, are incredibly light as the walleye nibbles at the pork tail. I like black on sunny days, and yellow on dark days or night time.

The one way that has always produced for me in weeds is by using a weedless jig like a weed weasel or weedless slo-poke and half a crawler or leech. Stay off the weeds just a bit and cast to the outside edge. Good luck!

My two favorite techniques for pulling eyes out of the weeds are:

1) Slip Bobbers with leaches or minnows.

2) Ripping jigs and plastics through the weeds is deadly on the lakes I fish.

I have also started to experiment with a split shot and weedless hook rig, this is a very good presentation once you get the hang of it.

Good luck

If you are fishing stained water drift right over the thick patches of weeds and drop a weed weasel jig with half a crawler are full leach into the little holes in the weeds. Let it fall down to the bottom, pick it up if ther is weight, set the hook. if no weight jig it a little, if you dont feel anything o your line then go to the ext little opening in the weeds and do the same thing. works great in 3 to 6 feet of water.

In the weed's,call's for my Jones'y rig. A simple split shot 25" above a #4 or 6 hook. That's it. Work the edge. Very well. And slow.Don't anchor, just move with the electric, and drift with the wind.Slip drift, they say.Cast in the weed's and with a very light weight, you can pull it through and let the bait fall into the hole's or down the edge.Working this rig and method for me put up more good fish than most method's,on certain day's and under certain condition's.Cloud's and crappy weather,is a key.Work it for an hour or so,with light line, say 4 or 6 lb.If this fail's to produce, try a jig and move faster.Next would be a slow troll with the electric motor, with bait, then a Rapala.Cover the weed's,for the Walleye live here, especially in low light condition's.See you on the water! My weight for the "rig " is 1 BB style;1 at a time, and find the best feel.Never more than 2.Pray for over-cast.

Stinger, try a weedles floating jig called the "Spongy Bug" with a small bullet sinker. A cool way to get at those fish. It's on the Phelps Tackle website. You can get them at Gander Mountain or other stores or order direct.

Minnow's / Minnow's/ Minnow's.If you use leeches,or crawler's,panfish do hit them first in summer. If it's an overcast day,the fish are usually roaming,so move quick to help keep them old 'gill's off your hook.Clear water type lake's,I'd say I can see my bait 4' or so.Stay versital. If I've got a decent drop off the weed's grow right up to,then maybe anchor to be more effective.I catch my own creek chub's,in trap's,and never let them go in the water's I fish.Sure they're the one's that grow in these PA. stream's,but they are too good to let go.One good friend dubbed them "Beloved Chub's".Exact name's of lake's,you say?Conneaut-Kinzua-Chautauqua,NY-(only once) and Raystown. Not many weed's in old Raystown, but the Pee-Wee island area has 2 dynamite area's.A main lake spot has me on it in fall.I live north of Pittsburgh, and I'm willing to travel for those 'eye's.The only stained water's I'd say I've used this on is Pymatuning.
