I'm sure you guys get this question (or something similar) all the time, but I have a couple questions for some of the more experienced muskie anglers on here:

What would you guys consider to be a few of the best lakes to fish for muskie for the first time? In other words, if you were going to take a newbie out, where would you go to give him the best chance to catch a muskie? Size is great, but I would prefer a lake that gives you the best chance of actually catching one. I've fished Lac Seul numerous times for walleye and pike, but have never fished for muskie. Any lake around Seul (or including it) that you guys would recommend for consistent muskie fishing?

Thanks,
Adam

For a drive to location in the sioux lookout,ON. area check out Little Vermilion,Maskinonge and Hooch lakes. You'll find high numbers of 30" - 40" musky with some larger fish as well.Smaller baits will do the job.#5 Mepps,3/4 oz.Spoons,(bass type) Spinnerbaits will all take fish.Exellent smallmouth bass fishing as well. Good Luck.

Might want to post this in the Canada section too.

We used to hit a couple of smaller lakes just outside of Red Lake, Russett and Flat lake, they are connected by a small stream that usually a 16' boat can get though.

Launch is a bit rough, but that keep many away.
You'd be hard pressed to get a 18' or bigger boat in there, unless they've improved the launch lately.

Have yet in the almost 30 years of hitting them lakes not caught at least one musky there and many times 4 or 5, also niced sized walleyes in these lakes too.

Will you find a 50+" there?...best we've done is about 48 but I bet there's one or two in there.

Lake of the Woods has long been regarded as the best muskie lake in the WORLD by many of the best muskie anglers in the business.

There is really no need to drive by LOTW if you are looking for muskie action in terms of size and numbers.

I don't guide, but I have offered to take newbies out a few times over the past few years and have been lucky enough to have several first time muskie anglers catch their first muskie on Lake of the Woods in my boat.

We see fish in all size classes from 25 inches to well over 50 inches every year so you will have a shot at quantity and quality every time you throw a lure.

I am told that Indian lake, just north of vermillon bay, is a nice multi species fishery. It has long been regarded as a numbers musky lake. It will be a stretch to catch a 50 on Indian, but 5 fish days are not uncommon, but it is musky fishing and being skunked is always a possibility. Add in a guide and you might have a great chance. As for LOTW, the previous poster was correct in saying it is a great musky lake, with a chance for a true trophy!
