I'm new to dog ownership, and put a rather large outside kennel (16x30) for my 6 month old choc. lab. Right now it is just the lawn that it is over. On another board I saw where someone suggested using fine pea rock for the floor? They said with using pea rock all the liquids(urine, rainwater, etc) runs though the rock and the poop is easy to clean up. They also said that the pearock holds low temperatures in making it more peaceful for the dog to lay in.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Your dog should be walking on the same surface you walk on, the carpet in your house. Dogs are decended from wolves, pack animals. Bring your dog inside to live with his pack. He will be better socialized, more loyal, and will work for you (the alpha male) during the hunting season.
I hope his coat matches the color of your carpet.

Yup, bring him in. He will be a better dog. Wiredog

I agree that pup should be inside. Its amazing the everyday trainning you do that will carry over to the field. But, I have an outside kennel that he stays in occassionally while momma is shopping and me golfing. I use the heavy rubber six by eight stall mats used for horses about 30 bucks each. Clean up easy, can't wear out and can be moved and the area re-planted.

During the day when we are working my dogs are in an outside kennel and then when we come home they are loose outside and then inside our house for the night. I am a believer that they only need enough room, for an outside kennel, to eat, poop & sleep. I have never seen a dog get his own exercise in his kennel .... hence no need for a big kennel. As far as the floor, I like concrete which helps keep the dogs nails down and easy to clean. My kennel has a trough in the back that hooks up to my septic system. Let the dogs out and spray it to the trough and down to the septic is goes. I do have wood cedar for them to lay on during the day or they can lay inside their house.
