Does the 168 take the place of the 240 plus having a map source?

Yes. It's the 240 with mapping.

They are the same except for power:
168 - 150 watts (RMS), 1200 watts (peak to peak) 400 ft Max depth
240 - 400 watts (RMS), 4000 watts (peak to peak) 900 ft Max depth

Probably stupid question but I've not seen a sonar/gps unit. Do you have split screen all the time or can you switch back and forth. If split all the time does the smaller viewing area compromise the ability to use the sonar or gps?

The 168 allows for many screen settings, you can view split or whole pages, whatever your choice. For the price, it is not a bad unit. The larger size of something like the x15 is a definate advantage in my opinion.
