Here's an easy way to keep your tie down ropes' ends from fraying without having to burn or melt them, leaving an unsightly end. Cut a clean end. Touch some super glue all the way around the end for about 1/2" and also the very end. Give it about 30 - 60 seconds to absorb into the rope. Dip the glued end into a paper cup of water to set the glue. Cyanacrylates need to react with water to set.
I forgot my organic chemitry on whatever that reaction is. Anybody else know? Thanks.

Umm, I think it's called hardening. LOL. I just couldn't resist.
Actually - I would like to expand on this just a bit.
I saw this used at a hardware store, and it works very well.
Before making the cut on the end of the rope - take a roll of electrical tape and bind the end of the rope very tightly with the electrical tape.
Cut right through the tape - by cutting off about 1/8th inch of the tape. This will mean, that the end of the rope is under maximum compression.
Now, go ahead with the super glue on the edges and interior of the rope. The glue really won't stick to the electrical tape - so after you have cured the glue, take off the tape, and then run glue down 1/2 inch or so on the rope and then cure that glue.
Now you have a rope with a very tight end, that is nice and neat.
Take care
