Wondered what experiences good or bad hunters had with hunting vests. Shopping for my lab and could use some advice. My pup will be two this Sept.

I had never used a vest on any of my labs. A few years ago, my current dog got a nasty cut on her chest pheasant hunting. I bought a skid plate type vest for her. It worked fine, but last year I noticed that it rubbed area under her front legs quite badly. So I quit using it. I have never tried the insulated ones or the floatation type.

I am currently using an Avery boaters vest for duck, goose and pheasant hunting. The vest has some chest protection, floatation in the back and a handle for you to lift the dog with. The handle is attached to a strap harness that goes down under the dog's chest and helps support the core body as you lift the dog.
This is the only vest I have used that has some chest protection and the handle for lifting.

I'm running the Avery Boaters Vest as well. The best advice I can give you is take the dog with you and try sizes on if at all possible. The "standards" don't always work. Some modification may be in order. Be sure it's not running causing sore spots.
