I have fished Milly a lot during mid-summer and fall, but not much around opener. Any advise on where to start would really be appreciated.

I would fish the sand. There will be flo'tillas of boats slip bobbering on the rocks.
Lindy leeches on long snells and you should have some fun on the sand away from the weekend warriors.
Fish at night also, get em before the ban goes into effect.
There is a moon phase that weekend and mille lacs eyes will be on fire!

I agree with the sand. The more popular areas are in the NE corner of the lake, near Malmo, and the WSW portion of the lake, around Vineland Bay. I typically let the wind dictate where I fish, in terms of setting up drifts, etc. Also, the gravel, rocks, and mud will be holding fish. Guess that about covers the entire lake!!

Don't forget to bring the crawlers....they can be pretty hot. If you can find some rock thats out of the way i'd look into that too.

Hey MnWalleyeKiller,

Do you have a marine radio. If you do, what channel do you use?

I think most of the resorts, and launches monitor channel 22. Somebody correct me if I am wrong. Channel 22 is pretty busy anyway.

This is spot for the opener from Sam Anderson (PWT). I downloaded it to my Lakemaster software for Mille Lacs.

the sand is sooooo flat, how do you know where to start there. i mean it drops off soooo slow,it seems to go for a mile at about 8-10 feet.i am so structure oriented i cant get comfortable fishing shallow sand with now structure and your electronics are very limited in 8 feet of water.

I have not had much expirence on the sand on the north end, but according to the realbottom lake map, it sure looks like a steep drop from about 8' to about 15'. I haven't put the map to any use as of yet so I hope it's accurate. Does anyone else know about the sand?
