I need your help- - badly!!!!!!!!
I want to learn how to Slo Death fish but for the life of me when I rig the worm exactly like it is shown on the videos and in the magazines, the crawler usually doesn't spin. What am I doing wrong?
I am using the Mustad (Parsons #2 Slow Death hook) and 10 pound test mono leader to a bottom bouncer - but the dang thing hardly twirls when I pull it at 1 mph.
It is even worse when I try to pull a Gulp bait. The walleyes are hitting live leeches right now so I thought I'd try a 3" Gulp leech. I rig it on and it just sat there like a limp piece of nothing. Wouldn't spin at all yet I read about people using Gulp on Slo Death all the time. I even read of folks using a whole live nightcrawler and getting it to spin like the dickens.
What in the world am I doing wrong???? I mean it looks so simple on the video, how in the blazes can I be screwing it up???????????????? Anybody else having these problems????
Sure appreciate your help.

One of the main things is to not bring the hook all the way thru where it comes out of the meat of the crawler. 1/2 way up the bend of the hook is good. I struggled with it for awhile myself, a couple of years ago. Do the above and you will readily see a difference. It even works fairly well on a full crawler.

I had very seasoned fishermen show me how to do this, start out with a good swivel
Then run a 2 ft. long leader from the swivel. If you use to long a lead lets say 3 to 5ft. it will have to much water resistance on the line and will hinder the spin. Tie on the hook, (I switched to the #1 size hook and have had better results) leave a small tail of line when you tie on your hook about ¼ to ½ inch long so when you push the crawler past the eye of the hook it will help hold the crawler in place like a anti reverse barb. Slide the crawler well past the eye of the hook. Also use your smaller diameter crawlers thy work better then the giant fat ones. And leave only about 1.5 to 2in. of worm past the end of the hook pinch off the back tip for a scent trail. As you start getting good at hooking it up and getting a good spin then start experimenting with longer crawlers if you want. To add a little color put 1 bead and 1 only in front of the crawler on the leader any more will slow or stop the spin, some days they only want it with color. I hope this helps it has been very good for me.

What size bead? I assume the smallest bead possible (3 mm)?

Not just a good swivel but a good ball bearing swivel. Sampo...SPRO...Cabelas premium..etc.
Keep us posted.
Good Luck

Yes to the bead size but I do play around with other sizes sometimes, I have learned in this game ( give everything a try once ) dig in to you harness making box find the color you want and give it a try.

Try two swivels cloped together. Try speeding up a bit. When I use a whole crawler I go about 1.75 to 2.0 mph. Try this if you want.On your main line place a 3mm bead then a smile blade then another 3mm bead then a ballbearing swivel. Then tie a 3 foot leader to a size1 slowdeath hook, then tie on anothe swivel... As mentioned above you can add another bead if you want as a further attractant... Seems to work well for me. Just an idea?? Good luck

Sometimes when I can't get any spin I just grab at the top of the worm and pull it down a bit towards the bend. I know this goes against the directions but it works for me. Also I will cut the worm off and thread the cut end on the hook leaving the head hanging down, not sure if it makes a diff but I like to x periment. Good luck.

Thanks guys, I'll try all the suggestions!
FSH4EYZ - how do you connect the swivel at the end of your leader to the swivel at the end of your main lines????
Thanks again.

My bad. The swivel on the main line needs to be a snap swivel.

If you use a bottom bouncer or fish weight it should have a snap swivel already. Dont get stuck on the whole 1mph thing . Go just fast enough to get the thing to spin. The chunkyer the crawler the better. Grab a new crawler about every 45min. at the max.
