What does it mean when the forecast says that the winds will become on-shore?

On-shore wind is when the waves are coming into or toward shore.
If you have a balky engine --
An On shore wind can be a good thing. At least you will get blown back to the place where you started - rather than being blown across the lake.
Take care

This reminds me of a true story of a balky engine many years ago - on a friends fathers boat. This fellow was out fishing on Mille Lacs one day. His engine started acting up and finally quit. They were fairly close to shore,so they started paddeling. However, about the time that they were only a few hundred yards from shore, the wind really came up - (an OFF shore wind) and proceeded to blow them back across the 15 miles of lake. They blew and blew all through the night. As dawn was breaking, they were within about 1/2 mile of the opposite shore.
Then the wind switched again.
About noon - when they were pretty much in the center of the lake again - they were finally rescued. A bit colder, but safe.
As I said in the beginning - an ON shore wind can be your friend.

on lake erie it usually means the wind and wave are only about a mile or two around the shoreline . many times out further there will be no wind or waves off shore .

On the Bays De Noc it means that the wind is blowing in 3 different directions at the same time! It would have to for it to be on shore wind. I think what they mean is Un sure.

Freyedknot,
I think this is what Arnold means on Lake Erie - the lake is going to go flat. If there is going to be wind, they give the direction.
