My 13 year old son really caught the musky bug and I wanted to get him set up with his own reel instead of using mine. I have the Revo Toro 60-HS and am considering purchasing a Revo Toro Winch 60 for him. He really likes throwing big blades but would still use cranks, topwaters etc.....

Is this the best choice for him?
Thanks in advance for your shared knowledge.

Abu Garcia 6400C for a $100.00 (with tax) the best reel out there!:rockit:

I would go with the standard myself as an all around musky reel over the Winch. The Winch is IMHO a specialty reel to get after you already have a good general purpose reel. I would also look at the 50 size for him as I'm guessing his hands are not as big as an adults are. Plus the 50 is all you need to hold enough line for musky.

I have both and both are used for different things. My Toro Winch is used exclusively for big blades. It pulls them like no other reel. My regular toro is used as a general purpose reel for smaller bucktails, top water, cranks etc...

The winch has a lower gear ratio. Won't pull any baits very fast. But it takes alot of work off of you. Once you pull dbl 10's with a winch you will own one forever.

My c-3 and c-4 6500's don't get to play much any more since I picked up a couple of comparably sized Records. Unbelievably smooth.

As far as i can tell the diameter of the 5600 reels is the same as the 6500's, just the spool is narrower.

Sounds like I would be best served purchasing a reel for my son with a 5.3:1 ratio as opposed to a high speed or low speed retrieve.
Thanks all who commented.

If I could only use one, it would be the toro 60 winch. I use it for pretty much everything in the tackle box. there is no reason you can't get some good speed out of it with lighter baits and it works wonders on heavier spinner baits, big bucktails and deep driving cranks.

Your son should be plenty strong to crank the lower gear ratio. Get him on this reel now and he won't need another one.

How many of those old school guys used nothing but the 7000 for every rod in their boat over the years. I would be usuing a 7000 over the 5.4:1 Toro 60 for most applications if they hadn't made the winch.
