With the varied discussion on scariest moments, a couple themes become recurrent. Besides the fact that a good number of stories seem to take place on Lake Erie (don't know why-hehe), alot of stories involve fast approaching storms. So, here's a few hypothetical(and real) situation:

Given: We mostly all know the best place to be in a storm is not on the boat and either in a vehicle or a building. But this doesn't always happen.

1) You are well off shore on a big body of water. A storm front with lightening quickly approaches. You will not be able to make it back to the harbor. What do you do?

2) You are on a body of water with many islands and the shoreline is also easily reached before this quick moving lightning storm hits.
However, there are no houses or shelters around (i.e. being up on some of the Canadian lakes). What is your best course of action?

I know most of us have been caught in that situation. For me, I normally get all rods below the gunnels, drop my antenna's, and, if possible, have people sit as low as possible, even if it means sitting on the floor (open boat w/walkthrough windshield). Just curious as to other precautions everyone takes. Thanks.

Hi Bob,

The reason for no answers is there is no good answer. I looked at this for several minutes and had nothing to add except the possibility of getting ready to deploy a sea anchor if the wind got real bad and you lost stearage. I know that even though I have done it, in the Canadian situation, you don't get up next to shore and stay in the boat because a lightning strike may follow your boat up to the nearest tree. Get out of the boat and into a low area. Getting wet is bad, getting dead in worse.

Hey Mac,

I know what you mean. Of course the right answer is don't get caught in it. However, I think this has happened to most all of us. The one that is especially tough is the big water situation, especially when there is some fog and you can't see the storm coming until it is almost on top of you. But, since the guys here are amazing, just want to see if there is anything more.

BTW, did you go to Alaska last year??? How was it? If you rather e-mail me, it is thegaiks@netscape.net. Good Fishing to you.
