My buddy and I are planning a trip up to Devils Lake towards the end of February when I get done with AIT and get back home to South Dakota. We have talked about hiring a guide for a day just to get a bit of info on the lake and where to start our search and then fish on our own for two days after that. We have also talked about just getting bathymetric maps of the lake and going out on our own and running and gunning till we find fish. My question is for those of you that have spent time on the lake, which is a better idea? We are only going to have 3 days maybe 4 if he can get the extra day off of work.

I'd hire a guide for a day then go on your own, cuts down the learning curve dramatically plus they're plenty of good ones that work up there that would be fun to fish with. Depending on the guide, if you offer to try out a pattern that they aren't currently working, they'll give you a few spots to try as long as you give the guy some feedback. Good luck.

Thanks guys. We will be fishing both perch and walleyes. I have no problem checking out a new pattern for someone, it just means i get to learn a new tactic. I will have to contact some guides and see what they have to offer.

If anyone else has any suggestions please feel free to let me know.
