Thinking about purchasing a couple of these and trying them for the first time this year. Anyone have any experience/success with them? What size would you recommend? I plan to get a couple of the glow colors.

Thanks
Derrick

Most darter style baits work well for ice fishing including the lindy darter.
With respect to color, you need to match two things:
1. Match the water color
2. Match the hatch - i.e. the color of the likely baits.

For dark waters, the various greens reds and black work well, along with firetiger.

For lighter waters, the chrome, blue, brass all are good colors.

Then, consider whether you are looking at fresh water shrimp, minnows, shad, or crayfish for the likely bait and adjust lure colors accordingly.

I used then last year on Lake Winnipeg the walleye just smacked them. They out fished everything even live bait. I have bought about a dozen this year. I used the med size but have the big one ready for Winnipeg for this year.

Thanks! Do you tip them with a minnow head or anything?

There is only one true Chubby Darter, and that is the original Salmo Chubby Darter. It is my only pick in that class of lure, because it's the highest quality and best performing 3-D Darter I have used.

The original Salmo Chubby Darter was designed from day one with 3 main parameters in mind to up an anglers overall catch rate.

1 - To create a high quality fat body 3-D profile swim bait that will pursue fish into the vertical and horizontal plane of the water column.

2 - To create a "sexy" wide wobble action to imitate a wounded forage on the upswing, and most importantly also produce that wobble on a slow fall without tumbling. Taking full advantage of the unique composition of the high density foam, that counters the weight of the lure, to slow the fall rate to produce a more neutral buoyant natural bait. This produced a lure that the fish can inhale more easily.

3 - Take proven ultra natural lure patterns from the vast Salmo lure line plus unique luminescent patterns to produce a tough exterior finish that offers options in all light conditions and water clarity's anglers may encounter.

FYI: A factoid most would not know is Salmo did test a rattling version of the Chubby, many...many years ago, and dropped it after a few years of testing reconfiguration. Salmo tested many versions of a Rattling Salmo Chubby Darter, I tested a few prototypes myself, ....but in the end it was determined that the rattle just was too detrimental to the desired action of the Salmo Chubby Darter and the rattling model was dropped from development.

This was done so the original vision and proven performance for the Salmo "Chubby Darter" would be kept intact, and in no way performance compromised. They would not sacrifice quality just to gain the "Rattle Factor". I admire Peter, the main man at Salmo, for making that tough call, it was not an easy one to make...but he and the rest of the Salmo team will not sacrifice the quality of their lures.

The family environment at the Salmo production facility in Poland is very unique today in many ways, the whole town is involved like one big family, and they all are very conscientious about the quality and performance of the entire Salmo line, they take extraordinary pride in there work. Highly admirable, in my view.

I wasnt impressed with the Lindy Darter.

They don’t have the nice slow random circling drop that the chubby darters have.

They just kind of nose dive straight down with little action.

Accurate post Eddy! One of the 3 designers for the Chubby Darter was at the St. Paul ice show along with a Salmo rep that flew in from Europe. Salmo is not happy with the name or design theft...but they both laughed at the way it "dropped like a rock" and had no downward action.

Thanks for the input...I did get a handful of the Lindy darters but I think I'll buy a couple of the salmo's also. Thanks!

Heads up: I designed a special limited edition pattern for the Salmo Chubby Darter that Gander Mountain had an exclusive on for a couple years, and now Mills Fleet Farm will have them for a limited time.

It is the Luminescent Blue Dace. It is a killer haunting blue glow pattern for crappie, sumo perch, and big walleye...the LBD.

Find a #3 LBD for crappie and perch, and a #4 and #5 for them sumo walleyes/Greenbacks. I had to run around and stock up on some spares when I could too while they are still around to grad. I have high confidence in that lure and that pattern. Check it out, see what you think of it too.

The #5 LBD's work good for lakers, too... :D

And a little too good on pike...that is why I needed more LBD replacements.
