View Full Version : kicker hp
I have a 1700 tuffy renegade tiller and want to fish some of the 10hp and under lakes. I priced 9.9 and really do not want to spend that much. Will a 5 or 6 hp motor push a boat of that size okay. Looking to get 7 or 8 mph atleast...Thanks

I don't think you can get what you want with less than an 8 hp kicker. My 18 aluminum is lighter than your Tuffy, and my 9.9 will not push it as fast as you want. Good luck in your search.

I have a 16' lund pro angler (older model so not as wide) with a 5hp kicker and the most it trolls great but the most is will push the boat is 5mph (gps)

My 9.8hp Merc will push my 17 1/2 foot Alumacraft about the speed you want. You balk at cost. Why does it have to be new? Used 10hp engines are common, little ever goes wrong with them (mine was bought new in 1978). Kickers are supposed to provide direction and speed control. They may also be asked to bring you home if the main engine dies. Forget the 5hp, buy a used 10hp.

I fully agree with Phil T. I had 7.5 Honda 4 stroke on a 16 Lund Deep V. Would not want to go any smaller and I bought it used for about $475.
Keep your eyes peeled, you'll save a bundle on used. K1esoxhtr
Ben,
I have a Honda 8hp on a 18 foot Fisher (1700 lbs with 150 merc). Wide open, the kicker will move it around 6mi/hr.
