Long Lining and I'm Lost
05-12-2002, 07:03 AM
I've always used spinning reels to long line. I recently purchased two SG27LC linecounters and have a few questions.

1. What is the most effective way of getting your bait/crank out to the desired "feet out?" Is there a way to cast with these reels or do you just let the drag of the bait take out line by free-spooling?

2. Other than pulling cranks, what other uses are you using yours for?

3. The operating instructions request you to take the reel off the rod after each use. What do you do?

4. In general how should this reel be setup as far as drag, spool click or not, tension on the free-spooling?

These questions may be to general, so any insight you may provide is beneficial. I hate to have to lose a bunch of fish just to effectively set these up.

Thank you,
Lost

First off, make sure the reels are spooled to full capacity. The counter will be the most accurate. I usually just let line out when I troll and watch the counter--sometimes I will thumb it out. I never used these reels to cast. I will run bottom bouncers and spinners with this set up as well. As far as the clicker, when I attach my boards is when I engage the clicker. This way, I can get my other rods set up and the current line will move out to its desired location. I will turn the clicker off when all lines are out. I usually don't worry about the drag. It is set normal I guess. I will adjust depending on size of fish. I never take the reels off the rods-just in winter when they are not being used. Hope this helps. Pick up a copy of Precision Trolling. That can help you greatly.

I do just as TK does.
One thing I would add is I back off the drag when I store them.

i dont't use line counters. I have found a very effective way of keeping track of line out when pulling cranks, is to tie a bright colored slip bobber knot 120 feet up the line and when i let line out, i just go to the knot, and when i use these rods for other uses , the knot is far enough up the line it doesnt bother me

If you dont use a line counter, how do you know you have 120 feet out exactly to tie your bobber stop on??????????? Just kidding around....

I kind of do the same thing as TK. But one thing I have found to work great is once you have the board on put the clicker on and loosen up you drag very loose have the reel in the closed postion like you would be reeling in a fish. This will let a little line out as you are moving forward. once you get the board out where you want then just tighten up your drag about one half a turn and leave your clicker on so if a fish does take it you will have the noise. What this will do is let you fish those fish as you are setting boards. Good luck you made a great choice in reels!
