Hi Jeff,
I have been running a X-85 for three years now. I like to run mine in the with the fish ID off, and in the manual mode. I like to have the Grayline set to a very minumum, 6%. The reason for this is that it will only show the grayline under the fish when the fish is rather large. It will also show the difference in hard and soft bottoms better.
I ussually turn my sensitivity up untill the surface clutter goes all the way down to the bottom and then turn it back a little. That way I am sure of picking up all small bait fish and any bug hatch's that might be going on, thermoclines too. This can be anywhere from 60 to Max on the sensitivity. When in the auto mode it does not always give you enough sensitivity. I always set sensitivity when I am reading O feet to 30 feet or 0 feet to 60 feet, etc.
I do not use the Zoom feature, but instead I create my own Zoom by using the #2 menu feature. This feature allows you to enter any part of the water collumn (wish we had a spell checker here) you would like to see. Example: If you are fishing in 24 feet of water you can set the bottom to read at say 28 feet and the top to read under 18 feet. This really magnifies the fish on the bottom.
The Lowrance X-85 is as good as any sonar on the market, but like with all sonar's, proper transducer installation is crutial. If I have made you more confused please e-mail me and I will try to answer any questions.

Trust me on this: may vary slightly from river to lake but switch off the auto so it is running in maual mode then set the sensitivity to 51-54% and set the grayscale at 31% or so. You should have no problem after that. I've had one for about 3 years now and absolutly love it.
