It is early but three of us want to plan a 2011 whitetail hunt. Have done research online and do like the Western Ontario area, Dryden Ontario area or north. Problem is lack of references and do want to get scammed as happens sometimes. Has anyone used a guide//outfitter in Ontario for whitetail with good experience? Looking for reputable, experienced, and professional outfitter. Suggestions appreciated. Jeff Juneac

Juneac - are you looking to hunt unguided or guided? If you are looking for unguided hunts then the areas around Dryden and Kenora are the areas you have to stick too. If you are looking for a guided hunt, I would reccommend hunting the guide required areas closer to the border. There are alot less hunters and pressure in these areas. That is why they are looking to change the NR deer regs to help lessen the hunting pressure in the unguided areas.

Check out John Butts Outdoors. He has a web site, so you can check it out. I've had some friends that hunted up there with him. They had a great hunt. John is a great outfitter to work with and they had some great opportunities on some bruiser bucks. Definately worth a look.

I will check out Bonny Bay and have checked out the John Butts sites/packages...which looks great. GNO-looking for guided week hunt and low pressure. References to a professional outfitter who knows area and does the homework prior to arrival. Thanks for information. Jeff
We (Gateway North Outfitters) offer guided whitetail hunts North of Emo Ontario. Another outfitter in the guided zone that utilizes hunting over bait is Greyghost Outfitters out of Devlin Ontario. If you want some other options, email me with exactly what you are looking for in the hunt and your budget and I will forward you more info.

Junec,
Give us a call or email for more info. GNO is correct our area does not require a guide to hunt whitetails. Even in areas that require a guide for non residents to hunt, Ontario residents are free to hunt there at will. That is why we only do our guided hunts on private land that we lease and own. We have the exclusive hunting rights to these areas and we practice quailty management. On this hunt we do not allow any deer to be harvested that are under 8 points beyond the ears. We limit the number of hunters on these properties and this has produced a consistant success rate of 75% +. We track the numbers of deer seen as well as harvested and if you check out our website, you will see our photo galleries for the last few years. If you are interested email me and I will forward you more detail on our hunts.
Our area is a great place for trophy bucks as well as the area where GNO hunts. And I have been told that GNO does offer quality hunts. I am sure you will be happy with either area, the big thing is to do your homework and check out the outfitter that you are hunting with that is what can make or break your hunt.

Blantant spam. Read the rules. Tired of outfitters trying to use the site as free advertisement. What they are forgetting to tell you is that deer densities have really dropped off over the last two years in both of the areas in question. Look at the 2010 deer photos on his site. I see photos of young deer (with a few exceptions). Makes you wonder about the ones that didn't make the photo board. So much for quality deer management. I guess the antlers are past the ears if you pull them straight backwards!

Hi Juneac
I am not logged in because I couldn't remember my password so my name and number will be at the bottom.
Our group has been hunting in Dryden for 6 years. We have hunted with Len at Bonny Bay and we have hunted with John Butts. Both are great outfitters. You will see deer on all of their properties.
As far as the size and quality of the bucks shot, it's up to the hunter. Both outfitters request that the horns are 8pts and outside the ears. Sometimes that is hard under hunting conditions.
Deer quality has dropped the last few years due to hunting pressure and hunters shooting small bucks. that is not what we go to Dryden for. This will be our 6th year with 4 hunters and we have harvested 4 bucks. We have seen many monster bucks up there but you can't always get the shot so you have to pass.
If you have any questions give me a call. Good luck whichever route you take.
