We have a lot of small waters around here.Boats not motor powered don't have to be registered in this state. Any arguments for having to register a small boat/canoe that is only powered by a trolling motor? (other than money in the coffers of the state's general fund.) They are quiet, no polution at the point of use, relatively low speed etc. Do you feel they should be extempt from having to register these? Some small impoundments here have had no motor rules and now have allowed electrics. I'm young enough and healthly enough to row/paddle but some guys are not,.. and it might allow them to get out. Also as we know an electric can allow for more fishing by anyone. I can understand the reason to have powerboats registered but am I missing something about needing to register canoes and small boats that have on small trolling motors? Would like to approach my state senator but wondering what the politicians will counter with.

"I can understand the reason to have powerboats registered..." Why?

I do not think either need to be registered. Next you will be telling me that I need to register my handgun. Then you will be taxing my ownership. Confiscating weapons that are not "needed". I think not.

I think the arguement should be against registering either boat?

Good Luck

Here in Minnesota all watercraft, including motorboats, sailboats, and canoes must be licensed regardless if they are powered or not.

I am not sure, but in Wisconsin, I believe that anything motorized must be registered. We used to have a canoe that had a little sqaure transom for the purpose of mounting a small gas motor or battery operated trolling motor. When we bought the canoe, the guy who sold it to us said that if any motor is used, it must be registered. That was about 15 years ago and I'm sure it has not changed. Law is law I guess.
