I was wondering when and where the mayfly hatch takes place. Typically what time of year do they hatch? What are the water and air temps? I was also wondering if they hatch at all times of the day or just at certain times of the day? I am looking for any info. on the hatch that anyone may have. Thanks in advance. God bless.

The hatch has been going on for a couple weeks now but only in small quanities. I was up by Besse Thurs. and they were all over the place.Didn't see any Sat. there but their was a good blow Fri.and colder. The big one isn't here YET.But it won't be long!!!!

In the St Marys river system in Michigan's UP the hatch normally starts the second week of June and can continue until mid July. It almost invariably happens in evening/night and the next morning white objects, houses etc will be covered with the flies. The water will have rafts of spent carcasses on it and in general, fishing sucks!! The hatch occurs on warm, shallow lakes long before deep, cool ones so if you are mobil you can sometimes fish around them. If you can't do that, prepare to be frustrated.

The mayfly hatch up around Leach Lake, MN was in full swing a week ago. Walleyes had plenty to eat without our help.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-05-00 AT 09:13AM (CST)[p]This mornings Toledo Blade, (Monday) says the peak for the Mayfly hatch will be June 17th. Hope they are better at predicting the hatch than the weather..

If (and I understand that is a BIG IF) the hatch goes as planned (June 17), when will the prime bite occur? Thanx for the advice!

This may be a dumb question, but does the mayfly hatch affect the fishing as much in the central basin or is the deeper water bad for the hatch?

The hatch was pretty heavy this morning when I drove past Besse...

The way I understand, as the hatch gets larger, the walleye feed more and more on the mayfly larva. The more larva they eat, the harder they are to catch. Once the hatch is over, and it tapers off for weeks, the walleye will become more agressive. Having said that, the walleye are already very fat. The food source must be quite good this year.
