I posted this last fall, but it seems like a good time for a reminder. Ontario regulations require that your chain hooks not be the simple 'S' hooks. They must be the type that has a locking clasp. But fear not, I have a cheap and effective solution. Cut a 2"X 2" piece of bicycle innertube. Poke a hole near the end on both ends. Feed the 'S' hook through one hole leaving the other end free. After attaching to your vehicle, slide the 'S' hook through the remaining hole. The tube should form a clasp. I hope I explained it properly.

On the other hand, you could ignore the "S" hook thing and stop at Minnesota or the U.P. and another benefit is you get to keep more fish, gas is cheaper, you don't need a Canadian license, and you don't have to be detained at the border. Makes sense to me!

Great idea at the right cost. Smart safety for trailering anywhere.
This was worth the price of admission today.
Thanx

I have often used electrical tape to wrap around the open end of the S hook.

Howdy

It is important to note, several states here in the US require the same thing. Even if you are traveling through, your trailer must have these hooks.

The inner tube thing works well, but I went to the hardware store and got a pair of Stainless Steel carabiners, like the mountain climbers use. Get the biggest ones that will work. Mine actually exceed the break strength of the chain/cable on the trailer.

Stainless are important, for obvious reasons. Send a tad more up front to save trouble in the long run.

Also a carabiner style clip is really easy to put on or take off.

Have fun.......R
