I will let you in on a little hindsight. Buy the handheld that corrisponds with your buddy's units that they have on there boats. All the handhelds are good today. They all do the trick, some of them have more features than others, and mostly i find myself not even using most of the features. BUT if your handheld is the same as the ones on your buddys boats they can help you learn how to run it and you will know what to do with there's on the water when you are fishing. I.E. Lowrance global map 100 and the x-15 good luck.

The Magellan Meridian is a very nice unit. You can get a full review of it at this site http://www.gpsinformation.net/mgoldreview/mag-gold.htm
Depending on your needs the Meridian comes in 3 flavors. The entry level one is $219.00, the Gold is is $319.00 and the Platinum is $349.99. Cabela's stocks all 3 units.
