View Full Version : trolling
I am new to walleye fishing and would like to know what range to troll mph? I know weather and conditions make a differance. But just looking for a range.
Thank you
Ice out 0.7 - 1.6, then speed up as the water warms up. Summer time speed range would be 2.2 - 3.5. Hope this helps, good luck.
Very your speed till you find out what they want. Like up on lake Erie if you start catching odd ball fish, like sheephead start trolling faster. That will usually keep the dog fish away. But like Stedke said, in cold water troll slower. In 50 degree water I normally troll 1.5 to 1.8 mph.... above 55 to 60 degrees I have trolled as high as 3 mph on erie, I couldnt buy a bite until that fast. The best thing you can do is keep a journal on your day of trolling, write down what speeds the fish started biting at and after a few times trolling you will have something in common to go buy. Also it depeds o what baits you are trollig. crank baits can be trolled from .5 to 5 mph, while crawler harnesses you might only troll .5 to 2.5 mph. Spoons are a hole different thing, you cann start at 1.8 ad go as fast as 5 mph. sorry to be long but this is just the tip, read the walleye insider and it will tell you alot. But you will never learn more than going out and doing it your self.

Ask around if you are fishing a new body of water. Every place is different. On Green Bay and Little Bay de Noc the rule of thumb is slow, slower and slower. Even in the middle of the summer. Then on
Winnebago we troll at 2.5 mph most of the summer. Play with your speeds and do "S" turns while trolling. If you pick up fish on the outside boards, speed up. If you pick up fish on the inside boards, slow down. Keep changing until the fush tell you what they want.
Good Luck,
Scott
