Had my first experience with slip bobber fishing this weekend.

On a medium speed drift, I had problems getting the bait down to 15-20 feet. When I dropped the bait vertically it would go down, but as soon as the drift began, it took up line, thus raising the bait.

When I put enough split shot (1/4 plus) to get down, it submerged the bobber. I was using 14 lb mono. with a 8lb. short (about 2 ft.) leader.

The slip bobber (wing-it manufacturer, purchased at WallMart) was the small size of the two available.

Do I need lighter reel line?
A larger bobber?
Or is this rig for more stationary type work?

the type of fishin u describe is more for statoinary fishin what type of fish were u after, aheavey line like the size u are usin create a drag in the water thus creatin a lift. if your goin to drift do it with out a bober. if u fish this way go with alarger bober then ad some wieght to make your bober neutral boyant.that is where the bober sits just barely out of the water. good luck.

Try Redi-Rig Release Floats, the bait can't raise up or drop down. making them ideal for the application you described.
