i have a friend that insists that deet and gas ruin gore tex. i guess i can understand the gas but deet seems a little more questionable. anyone know the real facts?

Good chance deet will harm it. Put deen on anything plastic and it tends to- well, just kinda melt it.

Gore-tex is a micro perforated PTFE membrane or teflon. This material is completely non-reactive will not desolve in anything we have access to. However, the fabric the membrane is bonded to is another story, wreck that and the Gore-tex membrane won't last long.

house-thanks for the reply and you are right. i called w.l.gore and asked. really nice people. deet will not harm it and gas will not harm it. the fabric its attatched to can be a problem but that is just common sense.

I'm not sure that it's the deet that melts plastic, but I know the carrier does melt plastic. Sprayed a favourite hat and the plastic logo melted like butter on a hotplate. Me, I would rather suffer the bites than the unknown effects of bug repellant. Current test results notwithstanding. Can't be healthy for you....nope....can't be.

Stay off the pipe...and don't forget to wipe.

I don't Know about Gore Tex but Cutters pump spray glazed the wind shield of my 692 Ranger just like sand blasting it! Fuse panel & steering wheel now have white spots that can't be removed with anything I've tried.I guess the answer is don't use Cutters products any where neer anything you put much value on ,including your self!

I had a brand new cheap "fishing watch" that got sprayed. Next time I looked at it I couldn't see the digits. The thing felt like 150 grit sandpaper. All of my watch faces are now glass.

DEET is a powerful solvent,..(look on the label of your Cutters,OFF and so on) Its in most OTC bug products in varing percentages. Thats one reason why I don't like to use it. Some states are considering lowering the amt of it in Kids products as the "adult" strengths have caused bad reactions such as seizures. I don't like it myself,..I use that Green Ban stuff, works great and smells better than any of that DEET based products I have been around,..Yea can really do a job on a sonar screen!

I still have a couple bottles of Jungle Juice. It is 99.75% deet or something like that, and comes in a little squeeze bottle so there's no way to keep it off of your hands. I use it for cutting wood in the swamp, or whenever the bugs are completely unbearable and I am not touching a lure. The stuff is spectacular, but I use it sparingly because 1) too much would probably make my skin peel off, and 2) once it is gone, it's gone - I will probably never find another bottle.

They still sell 100% deet in stores look for it. Small squeeze bottle.

DEET is cheap to make,..in this case more really isn't better. CR and others reported tests that show that after about 15-20% no real change in how well it keeps bugs away. The problem with the higher stuff is that it most of it evaporates in a few minutes. The other stuff they put into the lower concentration products keep this evaporation down and makes it lasts much longer. The extenders are more expensive than the DEET. I remember reading some years ago that the repelant companies (one that was quoted) said they made it because of the "more is better" thinking of people and it was more profitable as the people using it, used it more often and it was cheap to make. Years ago when I used it I watched NH black flies bite right through still glistening 100% DEET to my skin...DEET works for some bugs, but I too won't use it anymore. Too many health concerns and I didn't like I how I felt later in the day.
