: Adult Dog food advice
Gull Lake Guy 03-02-2011, 08:38 AM Our Golden Retreiver will be 1 year old tomorrow, so we are going to switch from puppy to adult food. The vet does not have any specific recommendations brandwise, other than "don't buy your dog food at the grocery store". He has been eating Purina Puppy Chow (at the vet's recommendation), but we did not plan on continuing with the Purina line. We have heard good things about Kirkland @ Costco, so that is certainly an option. However, I know there are a number of good foods available. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. THANKS
I'm not going to tell you what to feed your dog...that's up to you. I just wanted to say, "Happy Birthday Puppy"!
I love Goldens....

I asked that question on another forum some years ago and about started a war.....I think that controversary was worse than any Ford vs.Chevy debate I ever saw. :boxing:
Happy Birthday to your puppy too.

Jimmy Jig 03-02-2011, 12:00 PM A golden can live on just about any kind of food. My present golden as been on Purina Pro Plan, salmon and rice since she went on dry food. Does very well on it. My golden before started on Purina Puppy Chow and then switched to Iams, lamb and rice. Also did well on that........I would not feed any "off brand" food, but many do..
wiredog 03-02-2011, 12:01 PM I feed Nutro Natural Choice. I have a 3 1/5 year old German Wirehair, a 10 month old Wirehair that is my wifes christmas present , and a 5 year old Shelty, plus a 10 year old cat. They all get Nutro and they all do very well on it. You can buy dog food that costs from $100+ per bag to $20 a bag . Nutro is about $40. Read the bag if it has chicken byproduct don`t feed it. Purina has some good foods , their higher priced foods. But my dogs have gotten some really bad smelly gas from it. Wiredog
My pooch gets good ole Purina Dog Chow as all my previous dog have
stinkycat 03-02-2011, 05:08 PM My 13 year old lab is using Tuffy's Premium Maintenance (Made in Perham MN) and my 11 month old Llewellin Setter is on NutroSource for another month then I am not sure yet. I have read quite a few articles about not having grain fillers. Which most of the upper end foods do not have. I am probably going to try Taste of the Wild for the setter which has no grain fillers at all. We have our cats on TOTW and the do very well on it.
Congratulations on your 1 year old!
CSH Kucinski 03-02-2011, 07:51 PM Our dog enjoys Rachel Ray Nutrish food.
goldman 03-03-2011, 05:51 AM I have no idea what to feed an adult dog. However, I have hauled many loads of dog food to PetCo stores, and it seems they have an enormous variety of foods. I noticed things I would have never thought of in regards to dog food. It might be worth a trip in just for curiousity sake, and see what's available. You can take your dog with you in there, if your of a mind to.
Just a thought.

My viszla enjoys pro plan as well. We don't stick with salmon though, get whatever the hardware store has, like the sensitive skin the best.
Several dog trainers in my area use this for their labs and recommended it to me, as well as my vet. It is around $40 a bag but is on sale sometimes.
Gull Lake Guy 03-04-2011, 12:42 PM Thanks for the advice. We settled on Nutrisource, which was recommended by our trainer, as well as several neighbors. It was rated at 4 stars by an online rating service, as was our 2nd choice, Kirkland (made by Diamond). Pro Plan is what we are going to go to if he doesn't do well on the Nutrisource. Thanks Again !
Suzuki 03-04-2011, 03:08 PM The first piece of advice I remember getting from my vet was, "I see a lot of old dogs that eat PDC."
I currently use PDC at the cabin on weekends and Purina One at home. I have tried many. I remember one high-end brand gave my dog such bad gas we HAD to quit using it.
Mrclean 03-14-2011, 09:02 PM Ditto on the Nutro brand!
Minnesota Tiller 03-16-2011, 07:51 PM MY opinion check out good quality foods. I have a 13 year old lab as March 3rd and a 10 month old lab May 9. Both from the same breeder and both akc/ukc recistered. both had Dna testing on the sires to insure purebredness. so all that BS being said the better the food quality the better the end results. I'm in sales and keep track of our inputs and outputs of sales results. if you don't put in good notes you don't get good end results...poop in poop out. We use different words. same with dog food. poop for dog food poor results coming out in terms of hips, eyes, intestional etc. MY 13 year old lab Maagnum was in for his yearly check up today and other than usual old age symptoms he's looking good. better than most 7-8 year olds...seriously. yet genetics has a lot to do with it but don't feed tuffies. I am retiring him this year but he's 13 and has hunted 3 states hard for waterfowl and upland for 12 years. NO real guiding except guiding 10 timer per year or so on a gamefarm per year.
yeah I have a pretty strong bias for purebreds and quality food.
I feed my old boy Natural balance cause he's elergic to Rice and Ukanuba puppy to my 10 mo old. will feed that for 2years.
Minnesota tiller
dogs names
Maagnum 13
Mudd 10 mo.
I know 2 "a" in the old boy so is does my last name..Maanum..I like along with the few beers I had tonight.
2catch1 03-31-2011, 08:40 PM Hate to be a know it all PITA but none of the foods listed are that great. We feed FROMM made in Mequon WI. Family owned since 1906, USDA plant with human grade ingredients. BTW Kirkland and Natural Balance is made by Diamond who had the biggest recall in dry dog food history. Fromm has NEVER had a recall.
I myself did extensive dog food research a couple years ago after Nutro food started to change formulas and my contact at the company couldn't tell me where any of there ingreidients came from....Most likely overseas. Anyhow 2 months later and about 10 phone calls and still to date Fromm has been the only honest company that I was able to find. There is scary info out there on dog food. Feel Free to PM me with any questions.
Dave
Frank123 04-22-2011, 06:33 AM I got a goldret turning 1 year old this june too! At present, I have been feeding my dog BEEF PRO (puppy), as he turns to 1 year, my vet said that I will still feed him BEEF PRO (adult). Try to check if there's a dog food same as mine in your area. Cheers! ;);)
