when should they be used and when not?
I use them with a rotating lure like a daredevel. do they help prevent line twist.? maybe
I use them for everything we troll. This is just the way I was taught. I am sure some will tell you otherwise, but I don't think swivels have cost me many fish. I prefer coastlock.

Snaps only for cranks, tie direct for jigs, swivels rigging and snap swivels for baits that will rotate under normal use like spoons and spinners etc. The more spin the presentation will make, the better the swivel needs to be. For rigging, I use a small brass cheapie. For spoons, dodgers, flashers etc. I like a Sampo ball bearing snap swivel with a cross lock snap.
