I have an X-85 and the power seems to turn on and off when I am trolling. Generally if I have the big motor turned off, this does not happen. Is the motor interfearing with the unit somehow? Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks....Chris

Chris, sounds more like a voltage problem to me. Check you battery, connections, etc. You may have something loose or you battery is going bad.

If it was tha battery, wouldn't you think that it would turn off when the motor was off? Plus it is a new battery.

No, not necessarily. Could be your battery voltage is dropping while you have a load on the batteries. On my Lowrance, if the voltage goes below a certain point, the unit shuts off. I would put a digital voltmeter on your battery while this is happening and find out for sure.
What kind of motor do you have?

You nailed it right on the head perchjerker, check that battery, i have seen brand new ones bad right out of the store.
I thought that may be your problem. My X-85 was doing the sane thing with my Merc 115.Replaced the sparkplugs with resistor sparkplugs, end of problem. It is electrical interference from the motor, Lowrance was unable to figure out the problem, one call to my boat dealer amd the problem was solved.Good luck!

Two years ago, my Eagle Z9000 would turn off by itself. I had to turn it back on. I cleaned the connections and put some dielectric grease on them and it fixed the problem.

I'd like to add to this, my x-85 does something similar, but it does'nt shut off, it loses picture, and sometimes just flashes 200-300ft. Then it picks up and gives me a good signal, then out again, etc..I ran a power line for the locator only, but it still happens. Do I need to have it on a battery by itself?

If it only happens when the one specific motor is running my guess is its picking up some kind of electrical interference from the ignition system of the motor much like the old ignition systems used to screw up the radio and the heater fan makes static sometimes. My garmin fishfinder completely blocks out the signal on my radio in my boat, its kind of a reverse situation from what your facing but I am guessing it could happen. My suggestion is to see if there is some kind of in-line noise filter that might be put in the power line to your X-85 or try resistor spark plugs in the motor. Also an easy check, make sure your powerwire to your X-85 isn't passing too close to an ignition wire
