View Full Version : St. Croix Bottom Bouncer Rod Recommendation
I need to pick up a couple of bottom bouncer rods. All of my rods are St. Croix's and these will be as well. Any recommendations on which rod to get (length and power). Thanks in advance.

I like the 7 foot medium action with the fast tip. Part number AC70MF. Very sensitive tip, and good backbone down the rod for hooksets. I am trying to get my partner trained to not set the hook so fast because of the sensitivity.

Hey Jamie,
Is this a trick question? LOL
The rods you used to use to bottom bounce, and then sold to me work great! Ok, ok, the Illinois river has one of them, but it has since been replaced with another :-), but why change a good thing?
Juls
Juls, no trick question, really - lol! The ones I sold you are not made anymore and I'm not sure how the current blank compares - did you replace the "Illinos River Rod" with one of the current Premier's? I can't wait 'till fall, maybe the Clam Beds will cough up that rod yet!

No, not the Premiere...it's a 6'legend... received it from a friend when I lost the other.
Juls
The Legend is a really nice rod. If it happens to go overboard as well would you possibly be kind enough to let me know where - LOL?

All of my rods are St. Croix also, with the exception of two Berkley's. One is a 6'6" Series One, medium action. An excellent walleye rod. The other is a Gary Roach Signiture Series, 7'10", telescopic handle. This rod is made for trolling and planer boards. There is no action designation but it feels like a medium with a fast tip. I plan on using if for trolling, planers and bottom bouncing this year in Canada.
Might want to give this rod a look-see, the guides and wraps are excellent as is the cork. Very high quality rod. $68.00...so your about $30-$40 less than the St. Croix premiers (which are absolutely awsome in my book! ).

Do you see a wet T-Shirt contest opportunity here??? :8)
For the life of me I can't figure out why you didn't take a dip in the Illinois River to retrieve the Premier.... I still remember the day when I set the hook into a diaper - lol!

FJH, You might want to try the fiberglass casting rods in the 7' length, medium weight. I've been experimenting and like the more moderate action better in some circumstances. If you primarily drag spinners, the fiberglass helps keep the bouncer on or near the bottom in rough water and you don't end up with spinners in a tangled mess. Any of the graphite lines will also provide you with a great rod. Good Luck
