never shot the 270 but i do own a Tikka T3 ultralight and it is a nail driver
it would be my guess that the 270 is similar to the 30-06 but a bit smaller

I have a 270, 300 Win Mag, 22-350, 7mm mag and had a .243
I live in Montana, so my go to gun is the 300 Win Mag-- that is mainly because I hunt elk as well as deer and antelope. Many people hunt elk with a 270, but it is too small to recommend for that. I've heard a lot of elk guides talk about how they hate .270s because too many animals are wounded. On anything smaller (deer, antelope, etc.) a 270 is great. My 270 is the most accurate rifle I own and bullets are a lot less. It is probably the most versatile common caliber.
I hunted with a .243 from when I was a kid and for about 15 years. I even took my first elk with it-- however I also had a deer run away once that I know I put a good shot on. Any reasonable caliber will work if you hit the animal correctly, but that doesn't always happen. As always the right gun is the one that is sighted in and you shoot well. For me that is the 300 Win Mag. It has a bipod and always hits where I aim it in the field. I've taken all my antelope with it-- it is too large to recommend for antelope, but I've never wasted any meat because the shots were all good ones.
The .270 is a perfect all around caliber.

Thank guys
My step brother bought it to hunt deer, but I was kind of wondering if it would be big enough for moose. I've talked to a lot of old timers and before all the big calibers came out they used 30-30, 308, 303 etc for moose. Like you said it is where you place the bullet.
I hunt with a Tikka 300 win mag for all my big game (moose, deer, bear) and also would like to get something smaller for deer. At times I almost feel emarrassed having to use a 300 mag, but its what I have right now. I have been looking for a used 308 for deer, I figure that would be good. I know they are fast and fly flat but have not come across one yet. Not many out there.

I wouldn't feel right taking a .270 for moose. How bad would it feel losing an animal like that because it ran off a 1/2 mile before expiring. You can't always count on the ability to track it (e.g. heavy rain) Loan him your 300. :)

I would not hunt moose with anything smaller than a 30-06.
I'll tell him tomorrow that he now needs to go an buy a 300 mag if he wants to go moose hunting.
That will make his day.

the only thing better than a .270 up to black bear size animals is a .270 wsm the .270 winchester has been around a long time and is very popular with a lot of people that do a lot of shooting very accurate and dependable for one shot kills on deer size game and is easy on the shoulder an excellent choice

A light weight prize fighter hitting a heavy weight fighter has the same effect as a .270 hitting a 700 pound moose? That picture in reverse sees one shot from a heavy weight will crumple lighter weights?
For effective knock down power take your weight/bullets caliber and load - delivered foot pounds at a given range and divide it by 3. To be safer than not, the answer should be at least two times the average weight of the hitee.
Still, the will to live can never be calculated into a shot that doesn't knock them down consistently / immediately. Man to man, a shot through the heart, even with adequate shock, can still allow 30 seconds till death

Broke and sighted in the .270 T3 today. That is a nice little gun. A little light (weight wize) for me personally. I was surprized that it has a bit of a kick, but it is light. I like a heavier gun. Shot straight but high at 100 yards, after we broke it in lowered on the scope a couple of inches and it was bang on.
Really nice gun, now I want one but would want one that is heavier.

...of the man with one rifle". That would be me. Its a Sako .270 and I've had it for almost 20 years.
I hand load with Barnes, Scirocco or Nosler bullets. It has and will take anything in North America. Period!
You could shoot a cannon that will hurt your shoulder...and hit a Bull Moose in the rump and still not track it...so learn when to shoot and when not to shoot! Straight lines.
Nuff said...enjoy the caliber. It has a long history as a flat shooting, hard hitting caliber. The newest bullets make it that much better.
Great caliber and a great choice of rifle model

I have a Tikka T3 in 30.06. I ordered the .270, but the .06 showed up at the gun shop, and I took it. It's a great rifle, and a real tack driver. Weighs in at 6.4 lbs, I believe. I was surprised at how little it kicked for how light it is.

I love the .270, but I would used a bigger caliber for moose. can you use a .270 for moose? yes. read up on Jack O'conner, all he usded was a .270 for everything he hunted, It's not always where you put the bullet or the caliber either, match the proper bullet type with the game your hunting.

You bet...and i can just imagine what Jack O'Connor would say about a .270 these days with all the premium bullets and powders available now.
Quick, someone tell my wife that a 270. Is to small for bull elk, then maybe I can catch up with her trophies on the wall .maybe she will even let me use her rifle.i have told her for years that she needed a bigger gun.
