I just spooled up some 18lb. leadcore with a 50 ft. 14lb. fireline leader. I'm going to be pulling #7 taildancers and #5 and #7 shadraps. How much line do I need to let out and what depthscan I acheive. I'm looking at fishing in 15-35ft. of water. Is there a formula? Thanks

Mitch, I use 27# with an 8' leader. For the most part, regardless of bait, it will run 4.5' per color at 1.8 mph. I would say that the 18# would be similar as the amt. of lead is the same, however, the line dia. is smaller so it should run a little deeper. I think you should shorten your leader length as 50' will really do you no good. All you want the leader to do is basically disguise the lead line and to attach your bait, you need the lead line to be closer to the bait to maintain control. Speed is the most important variable. Faster=shallower, slower=deeper but you must run the correct speed for the bait. Test your baits on a sandy (snag free bottom) at a given depth and do the math. Works for me. Hope this helps, Swede

As already stated by Rather be Lucky above, figure about 5 ft. of ADDED depth per color of leadcore. The 50 ft. leader is a nice way to get distance behind the boards or boat and then the leadcore will give to the added depth from what the lure would normally run at a given lineout distance. [In summary: You have to add the total length of the Leader and leadcore to figure out the depth you will be running. Then add the depth attributed to the leadcore weight.]

Hope this clarify's the issue.
