My buddy, (he calls himself Net-Dummy), is trying to decide whether to buy a Garmin or a Lowrance sonar unit. He has always been a Lowrance fan, but is hearing a lot of good stuff about Garmin. What do ya'll think?

I have had both, Lowrance makes a great unit. But when it came down to replacement time, I got more bang for my buck out of the Garmin units. I run an LCR and GPS, but I still have my Lowrance flasher up front (old habits die hard).

Garmin corporation--- 3 divisions that i know of,, Garmin International-Olathe,KS,USA(2) Garmin Ltd.(Europe) at Romsey,U.K.and (3)Garmin(Asia) Corp.at Taipei, Taiwan. So yes , some are made in the USA and some are not.

HAVE HAD A 240 UNIT SINCE THEY CAME OUT. I LOVE IT--NO PROBLEMS. SHOWS GREAT DETAIL EVEN WHEN JIGGING. YOU CAN WATCH YOUR BAIT TRACE A PATTERN ON THE SCREEN WHEN YOU MOVE IT. THE GRAPH SEEMS TO CUT OUT AT SPEEDS ABOVE 40 MPH BUT-- A LITTLE ADJUSTMENT WITH THE TRANSDUCER HELPS. I LOVE THE UNIT

I've had the Garmin 240 for over a year. Shows good detail, easy to use. But...I have had 2 transducers w/speedometer lose the ability to track speed, the numbers wouldn't appear. They replaced them free, but I'm wondering how often this will keep happening.

You are right patriot, nothing is 100% american made (electronics). If you check the insides-boards ects.,they are made else where (possibly half way around the world). Assembled in america is more like it! Just my 2 cents worth.
