We were sitting around the campfire last weekend when this topic came up. You have just watched the plane leave from your fly-in lake. There is no way to call for help for a week. Someone in the party croaks of a heart attack. Would you make the best of it and go fishing? Or what?

That's easy. And if the fish don't bite, you still have supper. Bicep is my favorite.

An acqaintance of mine from work was on a trip like that. 4 guys, one of them a pediatric surgeon. Guess which one died. It was a 5 day trip in Quebec about 15 years ago. On day 2 the guy had an aneurism and collapsed. He made it until the next day. 2 guys took the boat to look for what they thought was another occupied cabin on the lake for help, They never found the cabin because what they saw (when they were flying in) was an outfitters operation on a nearby lake. Sure makes you think. I have another friend who goes to a place in Minnesota almost every year. He bought a handheld VHF (Air traffic frequencies) just in case. No matter where you are, chances are good an airplane will hear you. In Alaska, near the coast anyway, a lot light planes monitor marine frequencies.

Very thought provoking question indeed. How far from the nearest outpost, ranger station, fish camp, etc.?

A couple of years ago, a group was on a BWCA trip and one of the kids in the group drowned. They wrapped up his body and packed him out. Trip over.

I would think that situation would cause most of us to have a difficult time just "keeping going" as if nothing happened. Although logic tells me there is nothing that can be done at that point, I would call the trip off, in respect for the situation and the deceased.

I'm not familiar with fly-in trips, but if you are dropped off and there is no contact with the outside world until the plane comes to pick you back up in a week, then what would you do? Or will there always be some way to contact someone for an emergency pick up?

Come to think of it, if there is no emergency contingency, I wonder if I'd want to do a trip like that anyway. I don't think I'm into roughing it quite THAT much!

I showed my wife this question. She recommends packing the person on ice and go fishing. (since you can't contact anyone anyway.)
She reassured me that's what she would do for me.

A guy I played softball with had this happen about 15 years ago. He was on an annual fly-in trip with his father inlaw and his wifes uncles.
The second night while they were eating supper uncle Chuck dropped face first into his food. He died instantly. They had no way to reach the pilot or anyone outside thier camp. They wrapped him in a tarp and hung him from a tree to keep the critters away. They continued to fish, but he said the next 2 nights in camp were pretty tough with Charlie hanging in the tree a few yards away.
When the pilot came to pick them up on day 5 he packed the survivors out first then returned for the body. The pilot said it happened every 4 or 5 years, and in the future they should pack a blaze orange tarp at least 6'x6'. If the weather is calm enough, anchor the tarp so it will float on the surface of the water out a little ways from shore. Any brush or comercial pilot that sees it will send help.

The fisherman is dead.......Long live the fish! The question is whether or not you can keep that extra limit of fish? LoL!

How about fly-ins who were in the bush on 9/11, and all flights in North America were grounded!

Walk softly and carry a big fish.

I would cancel the fishing and get the barbecue fired up.

This happened to a guy from my hometown about 25 years ago on the 1st. day of a 7 day trip. The guys wrapped him in plastic garbage bags and submerged him under the dock till the plane came in for them on the last day.
