Will be buying a GLoomis 722 and am particulary interested in Shimano Stradic and Sustain as well as Daiwa Emblem Z-1A and X-1A, but will consider all responses. Thanks.

Hi Ron,

You are considering two very good reels. I prefer the Daiwa. The Emblem series reels are an excellent reel. I own several of them, and have for years. I have yet to have a problem with any of them. I like the handle on the Daiwa a lot better than the ones they put on the Shimano. Unless Shimano has changed, they are too big and bulky for my liking. The Daiwa folding handle is also a nice feature esspecially when you are trying to get a lot of rods in a rod locker. The drag system on the Emblem reels is flawless. I do a fair amount of guiding and one thing that I never have to worry about is the drags on the reels not working. I buy Daiwa and other quality products becouse I don't like problems. With proper care there is no reason a Daiwa Emblem reel won't last a lifetime. Go for the Emblem Z. You won't regret it.

Catch A Big One!

I have a Sedona, Sahara and a Symetre and I love them all! Do you use any of your reels for ice fishing? A good friend of mine uses Pinnacles and when we were Laker fishing in Ontario his anti reverse quit working so we warmed it up in the cabin over luch to work on it and it worked fine but once it got cold again it quit. Did not have any problems in the cold with my Shimano's. They are good reels.

I would suggest the Stradic 1000, spooled with 6 lbs. Fireline. With the Loomis rod you will have an extremely sensitive set up that will work great for jigging. The Stradic 1000 will hold app. 120 yds of the Fireline with just a little mono backing, which should be plenty of line for your application. LOL Fred

All the reels you mention are high quality reels, and I think youd be happy with any of them. That being said, I have a Stradic 1000 on my IMX 721, and a Symetry 1000 on my IMX 722. I would suggest you visit a store that carries the reels you are considering, put them on the rod, and see which one feels best to you. They will all balance on the rod just a little different. It sounds crazy, but the addition of line on the reels will also change the balance a bit. Also try a couple larger reels (Shimano's 2000 series, etc), to see how a little larger reel affects the balance.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the reels you are considering, it's just a matter of which one "feels" best. It isn't much fun jigging for nine hours with a rod and reel combo that isn't comfortable!

You'll have a dynamite setup when you get it figured out!

Fred makes a great point. I bought the 2000 series for use with mono, but I've found that I almost exclusively use Fireline 6/2 with it, requiring that I add more backing. The 1000 series would be a better choice for use with Fireline.
