My son, Age 10, can deer hunt in MN this year. I am looking at the Savage Youth 220 20 gauge shotgun. Rifles are not allowed in the area where I hunt. Looking for pros and cons for this gun. Also what slugs seem to work the best with this gun. Thanks for any feedback.

I have no experience with that particular shotgun but I've hunted with a 20ga. for many years and have tried a number of different slugs. As long as you have a rifled barrel, my best performing ammo on deer has been the Winchester Partition Golds. 2 3/4 inch are all you need - have not shot the 3" shells. They're pricey - you have to watch for sales - but they have always done the job the best on the deer. I've had several different brands that just seemed to drill a hole in the deer and they went a long way before going down. These Winchesters have a Nosler Partition bullet in them.

Good luck this fall!
