View Full Version : Minnesota Fishing Spot
Oldest son is moving 1200 miles away in September to begin college in New Ulm, MN. Have never been there...in fact, we've not been to MN.
Have decided we might as well view his move this far from home as a new opportunity for his parents/brothers to do some walleye and/or muskie fishing when we visit him up there....so I was wondering if anyone would know if there are any good walleye waters within a short distance of New Ulm ? Any good muskie waters ? Any suggestions would be appreciated....thanks !
Sorry no one else has replied to this. I now live in AZ for the last 15 years, but New Ulm is only 18 miles from where I grew up. Assume your son is going to DMLC? Sorry to tell you this, but New Ulm is in farm country Minnesota, not lake country. There are lakes around and some have walleyes, but no muskies that I am aware of. Clear lake by Gibbon has a lot of small walleyes. Only 18 miles from NU, but no resort or boats for rent. I would strongly suggest you look at traveling a bit further and go to Green Lake by Spicer. Couple hour drive perhaps, but good walleye and outstanding smallmouth. Or you could head east to the Mississippi. Good walleye and sauger in the Red Wing area. Of course you could simply go into Mpls. Lake Harriet has walleyes and Calhoun has muskies. In Fisherman did a muskie show on Lake Calhoun and you can see downtown from there. Wife could go to Mall of America shopping while you go fishing........ooooops. Sorry about mentioning that. Don't know what I was thinking. Better go to Green Lake (which by the way is not green and if you go to Indianhead beach you can walk out a block on nice sand and not go over your head. Sorry I don't have better information for you, but it has been a long time. If you get a long weekend there, my brother owns a resort at Park Rapids that you would enjoy. You could email me uufda@yahoo.com if I can help you more. Your son should like New Ulm. Nice town on the Minnesota River (catfish, not walleye).

Hey Ufda, I grew up in Gibbon. Where'd you grow up?
Ufda is absolutely right. New Ulm is a beautiful town but it is about as far away from good walleye water as you can get in Minnesota. Clear Lake sometimes has a population of stocked walleyes but it freezes out every few years. That lake is mostly bullhead territory.
I have never fished the lakes around St. Peter but walleyes can be caught in some of them (like Tetonka).
You'd be best off taking a day trip or weekend to hit some better walleye waters farther north. Even the Twin Cities will offer OK walleye fishing and some outstanding muskie action (Minnetonka).
This is not good fishing news, guys ! So....how is the cross country skiing.....Seriously, I appreciate the information. When we do travel up that way (late August is the first trip)I guess we will either plan extended trip to go north or just enjoy the New Ulm farm country. Yes, he is going to attend MLC and is looking forward to it! Your advice on possible destinations is much appreciated. Thank you !

New Ulm is a great town. There is a lot of history there (it was actually under siege during the indian uprising of 1862) and it does a nice job of embracing its German roots. It has a well preserved, beautiful downtown. There is even a Lund dealer in New Ulm... just nowhere to catch the fish once you've bought the boat :)

Mankato isnt too far from New Ulm is it? I've caught a ton of walleyes on the lakes just east of Mankato such as Madison and Frances. In fact i've caught 7 walleyes over 28" on Madison....great fishery.
