STEVE FELLEGY
Age: 48
Hometown: Aitkin, Minn.
Name of guide service: Steve Fellegy and Associates
Primary waters he guides: Lake Mille Lacs
Species: Muskies and walleyes
Number of years guiding: 35
Favorite technique: Casting topwater lures for muskies. For walleyes, I like to troll spinnerbaits.
Toughest technique for beginners to learn: Relating to the bottom of the lake while fishing for walleyes.
One piece of advice you give your clients: Envision what you are attempting to do relative to where you are doing it.
June-July fishing tip: During the midsummer months, most fish can be found in schools throughout most lakes. When you find a school of muskies or walleyes you need to fish precisely to stay in the school.
Most memorable moment: Every time a new muskie angler catches their first one.
Strangest guiding moment: Although there are many, a 43-inch muskie jumped out of the water and in the boat. The fish hit a client in the chest, and it knocked him off his feet. That was a once in a lifetime moment.
How has the lake changed: The boat traffic on Lake Mille Lacs is unprecedented. Global Positioning System has opened up a world that only a few lived in for many years.
Biggest fish: I caught a 15-pound, 3-ounce walleye at Lake Tobin in Canada. I've also caught many muskies in the low to mid 50-inch class over the years.
Daily guide fee: For two clients I charge $330. We fish from daylight until dark.
How to contact him: (218) 678-3103 or sf@mlecmn.net.
