View Full Version : Using Rattle Traps

Just wondering what techniques people use Rattle Traps for? I imagine pitching a rip-rapped shoreline or fishing wingdams would be ok. What I am really wondering, though, is if anyone actually trolls these? If so, at what depth do you see the 1/2 oz variety running at?

Thank you.

I've wondered the same thing. Have had real good luck for them on just the types of situations you described - wing dams and rip-rapped shoreline. But haven't used them successfully in any other manner. Never tried trolling them.

I've used them for trolling. But depth really depends on speed as they are sinking lures. The faster you troll the shallower they run and vice versa. I like to speed troll(3-3.5 mph)them on weedlines. I don't know for sure but I'm guesing that they run about 4-6 ft when going these speeds with about 75 ft of line out.

Good Luck!

Does anyone have an address or telephone number for Bill Lewis Lures? Thanks!

I have used them in cabbage when the wind is blowing in. I pitch the lure in the weeds and reel until it hangs and then rip it loose the eyes grab it when it comes off the cabbage. I use a 7ft Series One rod and 14lb fireline.

There is an article in the May/June Walleye Insider on lipless cranks.

i use them trolling at night over 10-13 ft of water with weeds
have the best luck when they just hit the tops of the weeds
and when they get hung or you cant fill the vibration just rip it real good and wham fish on

a quarter oz R-Trap is my main goto Trollin' lure after the water warms from the spring jig bite. I run them off F-lines (20lb test trilene low vis green) by circle trollin' breaks/humps with the rod tips high or "Z" Trollin' shallow 4-5' breaklines. Speed controls the amount of line out along with the drag of the larger dia 20lb test .. as far as lure speed, that is controlled at the helm/wheel by the circle Dia & the "Z" pace. The R-trap has a nice fall & rip on the breaklines outside the boat path & is a real killer, along with the inside reaction bite out of the boat path with circle trollin' humps.

PS .. the above method is for a shallow inland Ohio lake .. my home lake, not Erie. Also I have no fear when it comes to speed & the amount of line out!

I also use the same method at times with SR7s .. they will dig about 1.5' deeper from a straight-line speed troll with boat control.

Speedy- I've used them in the same "rip" situations. Best luck with them in summer. Discovered this method by accident but still don't use it unless all else fails. Guess I just have too many other cranks to try before rattle traps.

The 1/2 ounce traps will dive 6 to 8 feet depending on speed, length of line out and depending on a straight line troll or an "S" or "Z" pattern troll. They are a sinking lure and dive quickly when on the slack end of a "Z" pattern. I use them (and close relatives of the rattler) on Indian lake (central Ohio) extensively. I think the aggressive rattle makes a difference you can't duplicate with other trollers. Speed can be increased with the rattler versus other lures that begin to "porpuose" at high speeds and this has its advanages when a high speed troll is needed to trigger a hit.

I used them in Otter Street and caught 3 walleyes at the end of the day, just experimenting with them.
