Hi all...does anyone know of any resources online for beginners? Not product recommendations, but information on how to use them. Especially walleye rigs, snells, slip bobbers, etc.--how these things are tied, rigged, etc. Illustrations would be great. As a beginner, you always hear what products to use, but for the beginner who can't afford a guide, whose dad didn't fish, or doesn't have access to "classes," how do you fist learn the basics of getting these lures properly set-up and into the water? Tired of just jigging a minnow. Thanks for any help.

We've got a few pages on the Walleyes Unlimited Web site that might help you get started with the basics:

Walleye 101:

Walleye Catch and Release:
http://www.walleyesunlimited.com/info/release.html

Missouri River fish species pages:

Fishing strategies and info for Fort Peck:

Not all of the information will apply, but there's some of it certainly that will help folks getting started in the walleye fishing game. Good luck and have fun. -- mark

Thanks for the help. Walleye 101 already useful. One question I have is, what do you do with the loop at the end of a snell line? Why isn't it just simple line you tie to a swivel?

You just hook the loop on the snell to the snap. That makes it a little quicker and easier to change snelled crawler harnesses. If you use a swivel snap, it also helps reduce tangles due to line twisting caused by the spinners. Another trick is to use what they call a Quick Change clevis, which allows you to change spinner blades easily -- that way you can change colors until you figure out what color the fish want. -- mark

You'll find lots of information in Walleye In-Sider from In-Fisherman. These are pretty straight forward articles with all the how-to stuff. Is there a Walleye or general fishing club in your area? Most anglers are willing to share general info and tips. You can hang around boat ramps and get some good pointers too. Don't be afraid to ask. If you live in the Lake Winnebago area post here again and and I'll share some info with you.

One of the great things about the fraternity of fisherman that you are about to join is that although many of us will guard our secrets from each other like they are the cure for cancer, all of us will gladly help a newcomer to the sport and completely "spill our guts out". Reading will certainly help, but far and away the best way to learn is to be shown. You didn't say where you are from but I'm sure that there is someone where you live that will take you out fishing. Make your desires known to your buddies and their dads or look up a local club or hang around the bait shop or ask at church-SOMEONE WILL take you fishing and get you started. Why not reply with your location and maybe someone on the board will come to the rescue? Best of luck and welcome to the fraternity.

Thanks for all the input. Nice of you guys to help me. I am using my cousin's computer--I don't have one at home and I'm going home tomorrow, but there is a guy at church who walleye fishes a lot and maybe I will see if he would take me fishing. Happy fishing and thanks again!
