When I go into my local dealer I see where Merc oil can get down as much as $10 per bulk gallon on a sale whereas I never see Yamaha oil on sale and the going rate is around $14 - $15 per bulk gallon ( meaning they fill plastic containers to resell - Not Yamaha labeled ).

Does anyone know what's up with this difference and where would a person buy Yamaha oil at a competetive rate or at reasonable prices or is the going rate always going to be this way???????

Thanks

I'm sure the outboard motor companies do not make their own oil.
Yamaha oil and Mercury cann't be much different and the motor will never know the difference. I buy any name brand TW-3 oil and my Johnson lives on it!

Yamaha does not make oil--it has no refinerys.
I buy Fleet Farm oil. As long as it has TC-3 its OK for use in outboar$7.00/gal.

The above post as far as Mercury TC3 oilwill save you alot of money, poured it along side the Yamaha oil onto a paper towel and the color, smell and feel of it was the same. Use the Yamaha ring free one or two tanks a year and you will be allright. Seems to be the same oil anyhow. Yamahas run well with any TC3, as for regular oils she trolls well but the lack of power is noticable on top end. Non TC3 oils will get you back to the ramp.

You need to do more than pour it on a paper towel for a comparison.
Your oil not only provides wear protection, but also corrosion protection. Wear and corrosion protection are for the most part provided by additives in the oil base stock. One of the differences in oil brands is the amount and quality of the additive package.
The other difference is in base stock. Most of the cheap oils use group 2 petroleum base stocks. Most of the so-called synthetics use group 3 base stocks which are derived from petroleum.
Use a quality oil and you won't have to run the ring free. You also won't need to change your fouled plugs every year. I used to run the Merc oil until I changed to Amsoil. I haven't changed a plug in three years....
