In the market for a new black powder/muzzleloader. Looking for a .50 cal model. If you had your choice, which one would you purchase and why?

That's like asking what do you like in a woman...........

I have a 50cal. CVA Kodiak magnum that has never ever failed me.........but that won't stop others from saying Encores are the best.......lmao

I have a TC Omega and it has been flawless but would look at the new TC's like the ProHunter or Encore because of the better line of site down the barrel. IMHO

I have a TC Omega and have no complaints. very accurate, easy to clean, easy to load, and has never missfired. If I was to buy a new gun today it would be an Encore pro hunter. I would get the 50 cal barrel, a 300mag, and a 12 gauge and do 100% of my hunting with one gun!

Plus TC is made in the USA!

Actually it's real easy to beat a T/C muzzleloader. Get a Savage or a NULA and then you don't have to mess around with all the old fashioned, and dirty, black powder, BP replacements, or expensive and still dirty pellets. Plus you get more velocity out of a smokeless muzzleloader.

Thompson Center Triumph, is tops in my opinon.

It's an in-line if that's what you're looking for. It's light, SIMPLE, SIMPLE, SIMPLE to use and clean, accurate as heck, the sights are as good as fiber optic's can be.

All the guns already mentioned are great. Modern front loaders are reliable, accurate and well made. Each has a group of followers that will assure you they shoot the best and for them they are right. But not because the guns are better or more accurate, they have just grown to know the capabilities of their gun and what it will do and what it can't . You will have to do the same with whatever you end up with. I have hunted with and shot just about every make and modle from flints to the smokeless versions. I currently shoot a CVA APEX and it likes 100 grains of Blackhorn 209 behind a 300 grain hornady. The gun is effective to 300 yards with that load. As I said todays modern muzzleloaders are fantastic guns. The one thing I would recommend though is the Blackhorn 209, every shot is consistant without swabbing between shots. The barrel does not foul and cause increased pressure which leads to eratic groups. My typical round at the range will produce a 100 yard target with 25 shots in a 2 inch ragged hole. I can't do that with triple 7, White hots, Pyrodex or JS gold. You notice I said my gun likes, that's because every gun will perfom better with one specific recipie over all others. You'll have to find out which powder, bullet and primer your gun will like the best when you settle on one . What will make it a great gun is you doing your homework and time at the range.

some (see a lot) states have banned smokeless powder. on a side note about dirty powder, i shoot shockeys gold, i have never had to shoot the gun enough times to where i could not load the gun again without cleaning it, nor have i ever had an issue with it being so dirty from the powder that it effected how the gun shot

and replacement parts for ALL thompson center guns is free. contact tcarms.com or call them... breech plugs, screws for the stock and/or forearm... free. if you think your barrel has a defect, send it in... free.

then again, my dad can beat up your dad

+1 Tin Can, my TC Encore loves 100 grains of BH209 behind a 250 gr shockwave. BH is clean, consistent, and it just plain works better than any other powder I've tried.

I have had luck with 777 as far as not needing to be cleaned after each shot. You will have to do it after 3-5 though, depending on the gun.

Hello: I have been using muzzle loaders for over 30 years for Deer and Bear hunting. Just about any muzzle loader will work great but you have to find the right load and powder. You also need to know what ignition system you want, a percussion cap or primer. Check your states regulations as some states are different. You also need to find out about sight restrictions, such as iron sights only , are scopes legal ? I also have great luck with the Blackhorn 209 powder. It beats all the other powders I have tried. Ive used it for .45 cal., .50 cal., and .54 cal. rifles. Right now I have 2 knight rifles, a CVA and a Remington and they will all shoot under 8" at 2oo yards I'm sure I could do better than 8" with some more tweaking with the loads but if it isn't broke don't fix it. 200 hundred yards is my personal long range limit for game with my muzzle loaders and it works for me. See what your friends are using and try to shoot them and see how you like them. Also if a shooting range is near stop by there and see if any body is shooting a muzzle loader and see if you can shoot theirs. Most guys would like you to shoot theirs as they are usually awful proud of their brand. Also ask about how they clean their rifle, ease of cleaning and disassembly . I use scopes on my rifles but I don't over power the scopes. I use 2X7 or 1X4, 5,or 6 to keep a big field of view. I hope this helps you. Have fun be safe and enjoy muzzle loading. O- R

My Encore loves 100 gr of Blackhorn 209 and a 250 gr Barnes TEZ or a 250 gr TC Shockwave.

The TCs i have seen load hard. I would like to try one of the savage ML-10s and buckhorn 209.

The reason I switched to BH209 and Barnes TEZ or Harvestore crushed rib sabots on hornaday 250gr bullets, is that my Encore did load hard. Problem solved. I don't know if BH209 is approved for the Savage ML-10s, I think they require smokeless powder.

i think you can use either in it. gun is not legal in Vt with smokeless but I think I can use it in Ny with it.
