Anybody have any first-hand experience with the Garmin GPS WAAS correction in the midwest...South Dakota-NE-or KS? Been thinking about buying one. Which one would you recommend for marine and land use? Thanks, and STAY COOL..Boseefus

waas is not just garmin, it's another set of satellite signals that are used to help define your position. with the newer units you get faster updates and better accuracy.
if you really want great detail, the navionics chip and waas in the color lowrance lcx16......if only i had the money....WOW! that unit/chip are NICE!!!!
i would think the waas in a handheld would be alot better than regular non-waas.
hope that helps

Boseefus:
Which GPS unit you eventually purchase depends to a large extent on what your requirements are (e.g. use, handheld versus fixed mount, and dollars available to spend).
See the web site http://www.gpsinformation.net/whichgps.htm for guidance on which GPS to buy. For all around guidance and information, it would be difficult to beat the folowing web site: http://joe.mehaffey.com/
I required a handheld, non mapping GPS unit primarily for fishing but that could also be used for hunting. I also wanted user friendliness, or in other words, I didn't want to have study for weeks to learn how to use it. And it had to be simple to operate.
I purchased the Garmin 76 in Apr 01. Since then, I have updated the software via Garmin's site from version 2.01 to 2.08. The updates not only included corrections but also improvements. The unit is a snap to use and I'm very pleased with it's performance. Whether you can get more "bang for the buck" now, I'm not aware. However, I have no problem recommending people check out the Garmin 76. Of course, it depends on your requirements. Jay

I have used the GPSmap 76 for hunting and the GPSMAP 168 on my boat. both have WAAS and the acuracy has been good. Most of the time, less than 14 feet with the worst I've seen personally of 17'. Not bad. I can suggest those two units as excellent and have truly enjoyed their reliability.

I have the Garmin GPSmap 76 with WAAS and it is amazing. If I want to really show it of, I zoom it all the way in and walk around my pickup, or walk from the front of the boat to the back and then to the front again. It really wows people. Incredible accruracy.
I have the 168 and have been less than impressed with the accuracy of the maps on a couple of occasions. The unit shows my position significant farther west than my true position actually is. Is there something that I'm doing wrong?
I have the thing mounted in a reasonably unobstructed area of the bow, so I don't believe that is an issue.
Thanks for any help.

Remember this ....just because you buy a unit with WAAS doesnt mean you're going to get the corrected signal every time you turn it on. Right now Im about 1/3rd of the time.
