I have cought 5 tagged walleyes in the last two weekends on mille lacs. I took down the tag # and measured the fish. Am I supposed to contact the DNR with this information. If so where ,how and who? Sorry if this seemes silly but tagged walleyes are a new thing for me. For the record I never did catch one twice. One of the walleyes actually had 2 tags in it!
Thanks for your help.

Go to MnDNR web site:

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fisheries/taggedfish.html

Supply all data requested, they will send you a report of your individual fish when data is compiled, and data will help to shed light on the much-debated condition of the lake's walleyes.

Yes, you should email the information about the fish into the dnr. I have done it for 4 fish this year. They are supposed to keep you updated about the future catches related to that fish. There is more information about the program at the dnr website:

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fisheries/taggedfish.html

The email address is: fishtags@dnr.state.mn.us

The double tags are because every 50th fish that they tagged they put a second tag in them to determine wether or not the tags have a tendancy to fall out or work themselves out as the fish grows.

I don't know if you are suppose to report tag numbers or not.

We fished the east side one day last week never caught a tagged fish. The week before we fished the west side, and caught several tagged fish, including one of double tagged ones. I sure wish it would of been one with the Budweiser tag and I would be picking out a new boat LOL

Scott Lee

After digging through the glove box for an hour I found the pieces of paper that I wrote on. I sent the DNR an E-mail with all the information. Its kind of like getting a banded duck or goose in a way, I think its cool. 3 of the 5 fish were cought on the east side rocks the other 2 were on the center.
Thanks for the good info!

Hey MnwalleyeKiller,

I have been trying to catch a tagged fish all year! I'm kind of interested in seeing what the DNR sends. I shot a black bear about 10-12 years ago, I sent a tooth in to the DNR and they sent me stats like age, health, etc.. I thought it was pretty neat.

We caught several (8 or so) tagged fish this spring on the sand. We didn't see any during the first trip to the flats this past Saturday. I think some real good data will come from this study.

It's pretty easy to tell the age of that little bear cub you shot!
I think it was ~6months old! ;-)

What is the story with thr fish with a budweiser tag, is there a substantial award/reward for catching one of them? Just interested just in case i run into one of these what i should do. I cant complain with the numbers and sizes of fish but if theres a reward for catching one of those it might just give me another excuse to make some more trips up to Mille Lacs.

I think he was kidding there is no budweiser tag as far as I know. I dont think the DNR would like budweiser advertising on mille lacs walleyes.
Good fishin!

As far as I know each launch site has the info posted as to what to what info is requested on tagged fish and who to send it to. Also, at least at the Wealthwood access, there are cards available to write your info on and then mail to DNR.
