Every year I read about how effective Jigging Rapala's are thru the ice. About 10 years ago I read an article about a gentleman in Wisconsin who used them to vertical jig under his boat, does anyone out there do this? If they work so well thru the ice, why wouldn't they be a good option in the spring when fish are grouped during prespawn. I have never fished for walleye's thru the ice, because we never get safe ice around Denver, so I fish for trout in the mountains. So I have very little experience with jigging Raps. I would think this would be a nice alternative to jigging spoons when fish are in a nuetral mood? Is this a possible option, or am I just trying to justify the dozen Raps I bought and haven't used?

I use Jigging Raps every spring in Lake Erie. I don't ice fish so I have to have something to do with them ;-) Actually I have had great success with them.

It seems like they would be a very precise and subtle alternative to jigging spoons.

I see quite a few guys using them in open water, the only problem that I can see is when your drifting a river it can get expensive on the snags.

Local inland lake here we use a jig called a Got-Cha. It was origionally developed and used for salt water applications. It is somewhat similar to the jigging rapala except that the weight is in the front rather than evenly distributed and hangs with the nose down. They are also heavier. Besides spring, this is a very good deep water pattern for our fall bite when walleye school up before ice, if you can keep the muskie off.
